Description
Abbey Street Present Day An immaculately converted and stylishly refurbished split-level partially air conditioned flat with a large open-plan living room and kitchen leading onto a private South-facing patio garden. The property also comprises two double bedrooms and spacious four-piece bathroom with dark metro tiles and on the walls and Victorian patterned tiles on the floor and underfloor heating. Within walking distance to London Bridge station and enviably located just 0.5 miles from Bermondsey station, the flat offers fantastic links into the city via the Jubilee Line. Additionally, its proximity to Tower Bridge provides easy access to blissful walks along the River Thames. Bermondsey Street, known for its independent spirit, is nearby and features a great mix of brilliant restaurants such as Jose, Pizzaro, Pique Nique, and Casse Croute, along with coffee shops, independent boutiques, and pubs that aren't part of the usual high street chains. The area is also surrounded by excellent food and drink spots, including Maltby Street Market on the doorstep, an array of cocktail and wine bars, the tap rooms of Bermondsey Beer Mile, and the renowned Borough Market a bit further afield. The nearby Bermondsey Square hosts an array of cultural activities through the month too. Other cultural attractions abound, with The Bridge Theatre, White Cube, Whitechapel Gallery, and Tate Modern all within walking distance. For outdoor enthusiasts, green spaces such as Southwark Park and Burgess Park are close by along with dozens of smaller parks. Families will appreciate the local playgroups and variety of nurseries that contribute to a wonderful community feel. Abbey Street History Abbey Street is named after Bermondsey Abbey, which it connected to the river. A stream ran alongside it which is probably the course followed by the Neckinger, or alternatively the Lock Stream going to Duffield sluice? The monks’ lavatories were built over the stream. It was laid out in 1820, when the western end was built on the site of the nave. The oldest part of the road was at the east end and called Neckinger Road, with the middle section as George Street. Further along the road is Neckinger Mills, a mill that had belonged to Bermondsey Abbey and became a water-pumping engine in 1780 for paper maker Matthias Koops and is now housing. The Railway Bridge carries the line to London Bridge Station, which was opened in 1836 and was the first railway line in London. The bridge is a Grade II listed structure.
