Description

Historic Grade I Listed period town residence with versatile accommodation, annexe and private gardens 1 Myddylton Place is an incredibly historic period home situated on the corner of Myddylton Place and Bridge End right in the heart of sought after Saffron Walden. Of 15th century origins, and to have been three separate properties at one stage, this fascinating, mainly Tudor property incorporates a delightful mix of various periods including the former Maltings barn. In its past, it is understood to have been a Merchant's house, a school for evacuees and more recently was a well visited, and no doubt much photographed, Youth Hostel. One section of the vast cellars are even thought to pre-date the rest of the house. Listed Grade I, the property has some exceptional period features which include jettied stories, carved external timbers, a dragon beam, numerous exposed timbers, vaulted upper floor, fireplaces, panelling and what is thought to have been a Priest Hole. During more recent renovations, the vendors have preserved some of the early wall coverings including wallpaper on hessian (now perspex protected) and re-fitted the Aga kitchen which connects to the garden and the various reception areas. The main entrance from Myddylton Place leads to a hall with a dragon ceiling beam and a staircase to the first floor. There is access to both the breakfast room and a snug/study with a bay window which then leads onto the side hall and the double aspect dining hall. This has extensive exposed wall and ceiling timbering, wooden flooring and French doors to the terrace and garden. The AGA kitchen/breakfast room has been upgraded by the vendors and connects to the garden and remaining reception rooms. Fitted by Smallbone, with composite white marble style worktops, there is a range of cupboards with partial mirroring and a central island incorporating a breakfast bar, a bread store and boiler cupboard. Fitted appliances include a Miele dishwasher, fridge/freezer, steam oven and a Liebherr wine cooler. Within the island is a Kohler 1 ½ bowl butler sink with mixer taps and a Siemens four ring induction hob with built in extractor fan and beside the island is a gas fired four oven Aga with hot plate. To the far end, folding doors provide access to a second sink, Zip tap and additional storage. This room overlooks the terrace and gardens with a part glazed door to the outside. There is another exceptional room beside the kitchen with tall windows, painted panelling and twin pointed arch recesses with carved supports which is used as a breakfast room. The fireplace (unused) has a carved surround and a small upper door to one side which is thought to have been a Priest Hole. The double aspect sitting/dining room adjoins, with a brick chimney breast with inset niches in the brickwork and an AGA woodburner. It provides a versatile room with exposed timbers to the ceiling. Beyond is the final staircase with adjacent laundry/utility room having plumbing for washing machine and tumble dryer, storage incorporating a sink unit and space for additional fridge/freezer. This provides access to the larger of the two cellars (with a second boiler) and outside via two external doors. There are five double bedrooms over the remaining two floors, the layout for which can be seen on the floorplans. The principal bedroom is a spectacular vaulted room with exposed timbers and braces together with evidence of the workings of the former Maltings Barn. This room has been cleverly designed so as to provide a sleeping area at the far end, a sitting area in the middle and a dressing area with bespoke wardrobes either side. One of the bathrooms with twin washbasins and a large shower is used by this main bedroom. There are three further bedrooms on this floor and a large sitting/landing area together with three more bath/shower rooms and a walk in linen/wardrobe. There are two staircases to the second floor and here the (5th) vaulted bedroom has a dressing room with wardrobes and an en suite shower room with additional walk-in wardrobe. The two storey ANNEXE has two ground floor bedrooms, en suite and vaulted sitting room with kitchenette. The archway provides vehicular access to a parking and turning area. The private gardens have been landscaped to incorporate a central lawn, hedging and various seating/dining areas. There is a second cellar beneath the Maltings barn approached from outside.
