Description
Over the past 46 years, four-bedroom Dundas has been lovingly shaped into a warm, characterful family home steeped in heritage and natural beauty. Set in a peaceful valley location beside the historic Dundas Aqueduct, this early 19th-century lock keeper’s cottage was originally built around 1807 by the Somerset Coal Canal Company. ‘The cottage was constructed from local stone and stood at the point where the Somerset Coal Canal joined the Kennet & Avon Canal,’ explain the owners.
After purchasing the property in 1979, they set about creating not just a family home but, with a local entrepreneur, a canal business too. ‘We came to Bath looking for a new start and Dundas offered the perfect opportunity to combine living and working by the water. We restored the derelict lock in the garden and, for the first time since 1898, boats began passing through again.’ Over the years, the house has evolved with three generations of the family. An extension in 1987 added a self-contained flat above a new kitchen, dining and living room. A further 1993 extension to the kitchen and ground floor bedroom created more space. ‘The large, open-plan kitchen, dining, and sitting area has become the heart of the home; it opens directly on to the garden and can comfortably seat our whole family.’ They add, ‘The flat and moorings have generated a regular income for us and should someone want to make one large property the cottage and flat could become one to offer five bedrooms and four bathrooms.’
‘The setting, however, is what truly defines Dundas. We overlook the valley, fields, woodland, and the canal, with ever-changing seasonal views and an abundance of wildlife, especially birds.’
‘The canal activity brings a real charm to the area, and we’ve hosted countless gatherings here, including a wedding in my wife’s beautiful rose garden.’
‘Our home sits in a quiet, close-knit hamlet with just three friendly neighbours, while schools, shops, and pubs—including Monkton Combe School, Ralph Allen School, and the Wheelwrights Arms—are all nearby.’ A garage, shop and a canal side cafe are just a five-minute walk away.’
‘With canal-side walks starting right from the front gate – Bath in one direction and Bradford on Avon in the other – nearby amenities, and excellent transport links – including the D1 bus into Bath – the location is as practical as it is idyllic.’
‘We’ll miss the space, the views, the peace and the magic of this unique home and its place in canal history.’
